This broadside printed on heavy parchment background is from a copy penned by Wentworth Cheswill and  was found in the collection of Wentworth Cheswill, (1746-1817) long time Newmarket resident and thought to be the first person of color to be elected to public office in the United States.. Copied by Wentworth from original NH Colonial Governor’s Council papers, it sets the bounds of the new town, first selectmen, and tasks required by the residents, as a result of a petition to separate from the town of Exeter in order to form a separate Parish The document  was approved by the Governor’s Council  and signed by NH’s Colonial Governor John Wentworth on December 15,1727, thus establishing the town of Newmarket..
